Elastomeric Bearing Pads For Structure

Laminated Steel/Elastomer Bearing Pads are now in service in tens of thousands of bridges and similar structures throughout the world.

There is good reason for this. Elastomeric bearing pad support vertical loads with minimal compression, allow expansion and contraction of the structure with minimal resistance and provide for normal end rotation of bridge beams. In addition, they are easily installed and maintenance-free. All this is encompassed in a unit having the lowest cost per unit of supported load up to approx. 350 kips (1500 kN).

More sophisticated designs can be incorporated into an integrated structural system that channels horizontal loads to strong points and away from weaker ones. Ultimately such systems are used to mitigate the severe loading conditions caused by earthquakes. The Cosmec/Dynamic Rubber Team is pleased to offer Laminated Steel/Elastomer Bearings to suit any owner or State specifications. With our extensive design experience we can readily provide designs for specialty applications to meet unique design criteria or specific design requirements.



STANDARD ELASTOMERIC BEARINGS

A wide range of loads can be accommodated by varying the plan area, the thickness of internal elastomer layers and the elastomer hardness. Plan areas should be chosen on the basis of bearing seat dimensional limitations as well as loads.

Changing the elastomer hardness and increasing the effective thickness by adding layers are methods of varying the resistance to horizontal movement and the amount of such movement.

Beam end rotations up to about 0.02 radians can readily be accepted by adding to the effective elastomer thickness.

Bearings can be molded in rectangular, square, circular or other shapes. Note that custom shapes, clipped corners, slotted, skewed and tapered bearings may carry cost premiums due to mold modifications.

Plain Elastomeric Pads, without internal shim plates, can also be supplied by Cosmec. These Plain Elastomeric Pads can be molded the same as Laminated Bearing Pads.

Rubber Bearing Pad ( Bantalan Karet )

Rubber Bearing Pad dalam Konstruksi Jembatan

Penggunaan akan Rubber Bearing Pad (Elastomeric Bearing Pad) merupakan keharusan dalam bidang konstruksi jembatan.
Fungsi Elastomeric Bearing Pads adalah sebagai penerus beban bangunan atas jembatan ke bagian bawah jembatan disamping juga meredam gerak rotasi jembatan yang disebabkan antara lain :

-Perubahan suhu (seragam dan perbedaan suhu) 
-Penyusutan beton deck slab 
-Pergerakan tetap (beban mati dan beban mati tambahan) 
-Pergerakan variabel - terutama beban lalu lintas 
-beban vertikal jembatan
-beban horisontal jembatan
Pergerakan jembatan  dapat berupa gerakan permanen ( irreversible ) atau gerakan transient ( reversible ) .
Umumnya , struktur jembatan akan memutar terhadap sumbu longitudinal dan transversal pada dukungan dan rotasi hal ini harus diantisipasi dengan Elastomeric Bearing Pads.
Rubber Bearing Pads harus dirancang untuk dapat meredam gerakan tersebut 
(dalam hal desain pada struktur juga harus diperhatikan ) . 
Dalam beberapa kasus ,ada juga rotasi pada sumbu vertikal 
(terkait dengan desain lentur struktur ) tetapi hal ini biasanya terjadi jarang sekali.

Perpindahan horizontal pada dukungan muncul baik dari perubahan keseluruhan panjang dari struktur dan karena lentur pada bidang vertikal (karena sumbu pusat massa berada di atas level support ) . 
Karena itu perlu untuk menahan kekuatan horizontal pada setidaknya satu posisi , biasanya untuk melakukannya dengan mencegah perpindahan horizontal pada posisi itu ; ini berarti bahwa perpindahan horizontal pada posisi lain disebabkan oleh ekspansi / kontraksi panjang dari bantalan tetap dan ke ( vectorial ) jumlah pergerakan karena rotasi lentur.


Elastomeric Bearing Pad terbuat dari Karet Alam maupun Sintetis (Neoprene Bearing pad) yang diperkuat lapisan baja didalamnya dan divulkanisat dalam waktu dan suhu tertentu.

Bridge Bearings Pads are devices which transmit the load from the superstructure to the substructure and to accommodate movements and displacements. Bearings Pads are built to withstand loads and simultaneous deformation in any direction, while also allowing for minor rotations in any of the bearing's axes.Rubber bearings pad can be made entirely of rubber or can be reinforced with special sheet steel to increase capacity and transversal strength.
Types of Elastomeric Bearings
Plain Elastomeric Bearing containing no steel plate.
Laminated Elastomeric Bearing containing steel plate laminated bonded to rubber.
Laminated bearings are recommended for most cases since they give more reliable performance and better stability.
Plain pad and strip bearings are suitable only for low loads and small shear strains.


The Function of Elastomeric Bearings Pads
Structures are subjected to imperceptible displacements and rotations that have to be accommodated to protect the structure and surrounding infrastructure. The most common causes of movement being:
Temperature changes
Traffic movement and braking
Wind
Shrinkage and creep
Foundation movement
Post stressing
The function of the bearing pad is to safely accommodate the various movements and rotations as well as supporting the weight of the structure and to transmit the load through to the structures foundation.
Elastomeric Bearings Pads are designed to accommodate three types of movement
Vertical
Shear
Rotation
To transfer the load from the superstructure (both vertical and horizontal) to the substructure. Bridges with span less than 10m do not normally require any bearings.


To accommodate translational movements (expansion and contraction) e.g. movement due to temperature (can be large in steel bridges, up to 300mm); due to dead load & live load especially sloping road; shrinkage and creep etc.

To accommodate rotational movements of deck girders. Rotation occurs as the deck deflect under load. Also, some relative rotations occur in composite section due to different properties of concrete and steel. Differential settlement may also cause some rotational movement.

To limit forces transmitted to the substructures by suitable design.

To provide damping of vibrations and minimize effects of impact loading in case of elastomeric bearings.

Elastomeric Bearings Pads are designed for use in bridges and similar types of structures.

Elastomeric Bearing Pads are used extensively in bridge structures and prestressed and precast concrete buildings. Bearing Pad Also used in industrial machinery and heavy equipment applications.
They act as a load transfer element that is capable of supporting a vertical force whilst simultaneously absorbing horizontal and rotational translations that may occur.Elastomeric bearing pads absorb vibration and prevent sound transfer, while reducing the destructive action of vibration between movable and stationary structural members. They also provide for movement caused by normal expansion and contraction.



Type Of  Elastomeric Bearing Pads

Plain Bearing Pad

Plain bearing pads are utilized when load, deflection, rotation and expansion requirements are minimal.  Made of natural rubber or neoprene rubber , plain bearings can be cut to size from large slabs or molded individually to size.Molded bearings are designed with either single or compound bevels, or with vulcanized-bonded external steel load plates. Both molded and cut bearings may have skewed ends, clipped corners, holes, slots, be circular in shape, and/or contain top and bottom.



Laminated Bearing Pad

Laminated Bearing pads with internal steel plates greatly alter  the bearing’s vertical/load deflection characteristics. 
These “laminated” bearings are custom molded to any size or shape from neoprene or natural rubber.  
The reinforcing steel plates vary in thickness,depending on design needs, and are sandwiched between alternat-ing layers of elastomeric material.Laminated bearings can be molded with top and bottom vulcanized-bonded steel load-bearing plates.Most are molded from 50 or 60 durometer compounds. Laminated bearings may also be circular, beveled, or have skewed or clipped corner 
ends.
